When in doubt, throw it out

Postby CindyK on Mon May 26, 2008 7:29 am

It's Memorial Day morning and we just pulled a pork tenderloin out of the fridge. It had a really "off" smell and we momentarily debated whether it was "really bad."

Unfortunately, we won't be returning it, since we bought it at a Sam's Club (in a vacuum sealed package with an expiration date that's well out). Too far for us to travel to return it and complain. (Plus, we honestly passed the 3-day limit for letting it sit in the fridge. However, it was well-sealed and would have remained that long - or longer - in the refrigerated store case.

Some vacuum sealed meats (so they say) may have a bit of an odd smell, but is it really worth taking a chance that you or others will get sick? You don't know the history of meat or poultry you've purchased. It could have been "abused" at any point along the way to your fridge.

Bottom line: when in doubt, throw it out.
