Make Wind Chimes with Polymer Clay

If you like working with clay but can't get out, use polymer clay instead. It's not quite clay but it can be used like it and is baked in your home oven instead of a Kiln. Also, unlike true clay, it comes in blocks and already colored, including metallic colors.

A quick project is a small wind chime for your tree or porch. These are the tools you will need:

. Polymer clay (how much depends on the color or colors you want)
. 1 empty 15 oz. tin can (label removed, use can with smooth edges only)
. Small sharp knife
. Cookie cutter(s)
. 1 spool of thin wire
. An awl or something sharp to make a hole in the can
. Sharpened pencil
. 1 large paperclip
. 4 small paperclips

After reading directions, use rolling pin or wine bottle to roll polymer clay out like pizza dough. Cut out 4 shapes with cookie cutter. Use knife to and pencil to make designs in each shape. Poke a 1/4 hole in each poly cookie with pencil or awl. These are your chimes. When you are satisfied with results. Cure (bake) according to directions.

Use awl to put 5 small holes in flat surface of can. One hole in center and four spread evenly about 1/4 inch from rim of can.

Cut one long piece of wire for center, about 20 inches. Tie one end of 'hanging' wire to large paperclip. Pull other end through center hole. Cut four 18 inch shorter lengths of wire for your chimes.

Once polymer clay is ready, string wires through each chime. When stringing can, the chimes should be at varying heights, each one touch another. Play with this by pulling wire through can cavity to desired length until you have the chimes just the way you want them. Secure wires by tying to small paperclip on top of can. Once complete and hanging you will not see clips.

Once chimes are in place make a large loop for hanging on tree branch or smaller loop to hang from porch. Cut wire if too long.

I use Kato brand polymer clay. They have free projects on its site. http://www.katopolyclay.com/projects.html

Oh, I was going to add something on polymer clay, too! This is the greatest stuff and what a neat idea!

I really like their site (I've been using the "other" brand).

OK, now I think I'll add mine, too, if I can find the photos.

Just found my wine charms made out of polymer clay. Have to load the picture and I also did a "how-to" on them that I'll post a link to.
